Le défaut est fréquent au démarrage mais de temps en temps ça se passe bien et aussi après quelques redémarrages.
les services alsa affichent dans le CCM : alsa-restore arrêté, alsa -state démarré, alsa-store arrêté.
Pour les services arrêtés, le bouton démarrer est inactif.
En console:

4 rdémarrages avec le son opérationnel.
Comme quoi la patience est une vertu.

Je viens de vérifier :
j'ai bien dans le cmm :
alsa-restore arrêté, alsa -state démarré, alsa-store arrêté
Je n'ai jamais remarqué d'anomalie, pourtant je teste 3 M5 dans différents ordi.
Mais cela parait normal, et le son de cauldron fonctionne bien.

C'est vrai, aussi je ne l'ai pas fait : je ne sais pas ce qui déconne, peut être ma carte son.
J'ai cité un jeu parcequ'il permettait un constat simple valable pour toutes les applis utilisant du son y compris le controle de volume PulseAudio sur monvieux ordinateur.
Ce constat était : nada que dalle rien avec un message en console

Suite au rafraichissement de mon user/.config/pulse, le son est revenu.
Mais la manip que tu indiques donne le résultat ci-dessous ( avec le son qui fonctionne)

je tente sur un 2eme utilisateur : son correct avec cependant le même message d'erreur avant démarrage de mplayer que celui déja signalé lorsque le 1er utilisateur démarrait mplayer.

avant de relancer la configuration de pulse, il faudrait que tu supprimes ce dossier de configuration de pulse :
voir les fichiers cachés :
/home/toi/.config/pulse
Édit, étant avec KDE, je ne sais pas si c'est le même chemin pour XFCE ?

Sur le blocage en cours j'ai testé fichier par fichier :
les fichiers ***card_database.tdb et ***-default-sink ne changent rien.
Le rafraichissement du fichier ***-default_source relance pulse audio et le son à la reconnexion.
Les contenus des 2 fichiers ***-default_source ( ancien et nouveau)
sont identiques ! 
Si vous avez une suggestion pour un autre essai quand le blocage reviendra, n'hésitez pas.

Après une ou plusieurs reconnections, ça finit par passer!
Il semble qu'une temporisation soit limite avec ma configuration personnalisée.
Est-ce qu'un rapport de bug est justifié ?
Les bugs signalés sur PulseAudio semblent différents.

Après une ou plusieurs reconnections, ça finit par passer!
Il semble qu'une temporisation soit limite avec ma configuration personnalisée.
Est-ce qu'un rapport de bug est justifié ?
Les bugs signalés sur PulseAudio semblent différents.</div>
essaie ce qui suit pour l'exemple on dit utilisateur toto :

usermod -G audio,video -a toto
remplacer toto par le nom de l’utilisateur qui pose probleme

J'ai fait ta manip ; le 1er redémarrage m'a fourni le son donc à suivre puisque le défaut est intermittent.
Je pense que si ça passe la semaine sans accroc, je pourrais passer en résolu.

L'utilisateur défaillant est bien inscrit dans les groupes audio et vidéo.
Le fichier xsessions-errors donne les mêmes informations que précédemment :
